Life Like That...

by Iskandar

The evening was warm under the blaring sun. The wind whispered softly in my ears. There were a few people wandering around the cafe. There still were not many people inside. I looked around to see whether the guys had come. There was still no sign of them. Well, they’re late as usual! “Hey!” a familiar voice suddenly shouted from behind. Still in the state of shock, I feebly turned around and saw the four of them coming. “You brats, where have you guys been?” I exclaimed. I noticed they were still trying to catch their breath. “You’ll never guess what happened!” said Nan “What?” my eyes looked straight into Nan’s hazel eyes. “When I went to the ATM, I discovered that I had withdrawn all my money. There was nothing left!” “Well, I’m not surprise!” I abruptly said. “That was when it took a little time for me to borrow some from Azad, our banker!” uttered Nan jokingly. Suddenly Azad’s big hand rested on Nan’s back. Nan winced a little. We busted out into laughter. My eyes slowly observed them. Nan placed his arm around Zul’s shoulder. It wasn’t odd for them to hold each other’s palms tightly even in the public. They belong to each other. I could see the tenderness, which bound them together. I felt happy for them. Yeah... It was wonderful to see them trudging life happily. I pushed my sight to the new couple, Azad and Akil. They were still not certain yet. But I got the feeling that they might be going steady in a very short time. I could see the way their eyes met. The way they touched. It was full of love. They seemed to be a good couple. It is undeniable that Azad is patient and talkative, while Akil is quite a persistent and quiet person. But I do think that they would make the most of it. Sometimes love is so strong that one couldn’t see the other’s weaknesses. I hope they will bypass all obstacles. What matters most is the feelings of belonging and mutual chemistry. “Ok guys, since I got a promotion today, the lunch will be on me!” I declared. “Congratulations. Well, I think your luck is picking up!” said Zul, displaying his drop-dead smile. “You know what, we need the treat. There is a hole in my pocket right now!” said Azad later. “Well, what are we waiting for, let’s eat!” insisted Akil. We ate and chatted, talking about almost everything. I told them about how I got promoted and about my family who was going to throw a party this weekend. Nan, Zul, Azad and Akil, well, tried to discuss problems that they had always face. I know sometimes even if the surface looks so wonderful, there’s no one to know what actually occurs inside. Only God knows their grieving. I reckoned that they would get over any problem as long as they had each other. Well, when your loved one is beside you, there’s nothing that can stand in your way. Two heads are better than one, right? I pondered alone while setting my eyes on them. I saw the light of happiness fulfilling their life. They have found the right one. As for me, I’m still searching for my other half. Though, I really don’t know when this search will be over, I knew that somewhere out there, someone is meant for me. All my life I pray for someone to love and to hold on to. Watching the joyfulness of my friends sent me out of the blue. Maybe I don’t need someone right now. It’s enough just hanging around my friends. There might be time when we don’t speak the same language, which neither of us could comprehend. But then we will try to settle our differences and find a way to make amendments. I leaned on the chair recklessly. For a moment I took a deep breath. The aroma of the Cinnamon was so relaxing. They were still talking about their jobs. I closed my eyes. I could hear their voices carried away by the misty air. My mind was slowly sinking and my thoughts were kept on coming. I thought to myself, I’ve got everything - caring family, great friends, successful career and my total freedom. But I sensed there was still something missing. Suddenly deep down I felt sad... What else could that be? “Hey, Let’s go!” said Nan as he broke the silence in me. “You guys go ahead. I will come later.” replied me softly. “Ok, we’ll be just right over there.” Azad pointed out a gift shop which just opposite the cafe. I nodded a little. I watched them as they walked away. I might be a little envy of how perfect their life turned out to be, but then I know my time will come. “Hey Lie, are you coming!” shouted Akil at the distance. I pushed the chair aside, stood up and walked slowly towards them. I couldn’t stop to keep on asking myself the same question as my heart displayed the sadness within.... Just what else could it be?
