LOCAL NEWS—A youth, 19, was in critical condition, with head injuries yesterday as a result of being beaten with a baseball bat when he and three young companions, aged 18, tried to rob a hardware store. The four youths, armed with a pistol and a pellet rifle, came in and demanded cash from the register, police said.

The injured youth, Joe Rasher, was in the hospital, charged with attempted murder, attempted robbery and possession of a dangerous weapon.
