So here I was headed back to the states with my step dad's lawyer on the same plane that carried my dead parents. The lawyers name is Brad Steinman and he was kind enough to come to London and take care of all the details for me. He is in as much shock as I am I think.
Now since the trip is a good half a day he took the opportunity to lay out my life for me as he saw it. "Erik, your parents were financially well off and the house in Brentwood is all but paid off. You are the only heir to the estate and there is no one alive to contest that fact. The only problem is your age. You are not eligible to inherit anything till you graduate from high school. Now your step father did make me the executor of the estate but I can only make reasonable draws on the estate until you inherit it. Your parents never thought that both of them would be gone before you left high school so they never thought of what might happen in that case. The other problem is that you need to live with a guardian. I will be glad to make a plea to the courts that I be your guardian or we can take the easy way out and you can go live with your father."
Hearing that kinda jarred me awake. I met the guy twice maybe that I remember. Once when I was about six and then when I was around thirteen he and some women he was shacking up with were in California to go to Disneyland and then to San Diego. My mom drove me down to Orange County and we met in the lobby of the Marriott right near Disneyland. My mom gave us privacy but was never out of sight. We had lunch and then they were off. From what I remember my dad was kinda strapping, well actually built like a shit brick house, must be where I get my physic actually, but not to well-dressed. He was a working man after all. He was an auto mechanic and he did own his own shop some place in rural Texas. I think it was outside of Houston somewhere. I guess I could see if living with him was a possibility. He didn't seem to be too bad of a guy. Just didn't have the income that kept up with mom's spending habits.
"You think my dad would want me Brad?" I asked.
"Well Erik, according to your mother's will if both she and your stepfather did meet an early death I was to contact your dad to ask that very question. It seems your mother never really had a problem with your dad but just thought that you were from such different backgrounds that it would be best if you weren't influenced, her words not mine. So anyway, I did contact him before I left for London, and he was shocked and even a bit sad about the loss of your mother. It seems he might have cared more for her than she ever did for him. Anyway he said that he had always wanted to know you better and that he would feel great if you wanted to live with him. He did say that living with him was nothing like you’re used to but you monthly allowance will help you cope with that. It would mean a change of schools and everything actually. What do you think Erik? If you want to give your dad a try and if it works out great but if at anytime you think it was a mistake you pick up the phone and I will arrange it with him to have you back in California with my family. He already knows that if you agree to come it will be on a trial basis."
I thought about it for a minute then I decided, "Brad, I know that if I don't try it I may regret it for the rest of my life. I appreciate your kind offer to live with you but I guess it’s only right I give my dad the first shot. My mother never talked ill of him, she just never talked about him, so I can only go off the couple of times I did meet him. Anyway, it’s best I go to Texas. Who knows, maybe I'll become a redneck!" I laughed and Brad joined me.
"Well then if you don't mind Erik your dad wanted to come to the funeral then help you get ready to go back with him. Are you ok with that?" Brad commented.
"Well its best to get it done as soon as possible. I agree that he should come and get me. Let’s get it all over with." I finished.
