My Shot At Stardom, Part 2

by Just Another Has-Been Actor

My Shot At Stardom, Part II "Boogie Nights, New Line Cinema's film about the porno business starring Mark Wahlberg, had me squirming in my seat. It was too real. I know, I went through many of the same things Wahlberg's character went through---working two jobs trying to stay afloat, trying to keep peace with a mom who was overbearing, and meeting a filmmaker who thought the porno business could turn my life around. I said okay to a screen test at his home, got a pat on the back from the guy, and was told there would be a car at my home the next morning to pick me up. I understood showing off my body would be a big part of this screen test, but that wasn't all he asked me to do. He set up a scene for me and one of his "stars," a dark-haired adonis named Slim, to act out there in front of him. "You two are old friends who haven't seen each other in some time," he said. "You come in, walk over to the couch, and then you do what you would do if we were actually shooting." He lost me. "I-I don't know what . . ." "He means he wants us to fuck," Slim whispered. It's still difficult to think of myself on that couch with that producer watching. My only break was Slim's insistance that I get on my stomach; I was able to hide my embarrassment in a throwpillow. "I can't believe we did that," I told Slim on the way out to the pool. "You heard him say you did fine, didn't you? Think about that and the money that's going to come rolling in now that you're hired." The money rolled in, sure enough. Along with hanger-ons who wanted to tell me where and how to spend it. A lot of hands reached into my pockets and there was no polite way to take them out. When it came time to choose an on-screen name for me, someone suggested "Tightwad." "You'd better take it easy," Slim said. "In this business, you need all the friends you can make." I didn't make any friends in that business. I took my money and ran. It all went into a savings account. "It's the most money I've ever had," I told Slim. "I'll be damned if I'm going to let it slip away." Slim went broke trying to support a cocaine habit. When he started coming to me to buy cocaine for him, I took off for Texas to visit relatives. He never saw me again. No one else in that business did, either.
